Bolt.new (StackBlitz)

Seven years of in-browser infrastructure met the right model threshold and exploded into a tens-of-millions revenue claim in five months; after that the revenue curve went dark.

Verdict: Gaps remain

01

Profile

What it does
A browser-based AI tool that turns a prompt into a working web app. Built on WebContainer, the in-browser operating system StackBlitz spent seven years developing. According to the podcast page, the breaking point was model quality: "When Claude 3.5 Sonnet launched, it changed everything" [1]
Founded
StackBlitz in 2017; Bolt.new launched in October 2024 [1]
Founders
Eric Simons (CEO) and the StackBlitz team [1]
Pricing model
Token-based. Free tier: 300K tokens a day, 1M a month; Pro at $25/month for 10M tokens; Teams at $30 per member per month; since 1 July 2025 unused tokens on paid plans roll over for one extra month [5].
Funding
  • $22M Series A (previously undisclosed; Sacra compilation) [4]
  • January 2025: $105.5M Series B, Emergence Capital and GV, at roughly $700M (Sacra compilation; official announcement returned 404) [4]

Growth loop

  1. 1Prompt: a working app
  2. 2Output shared, new user tries it
  3. 3Free tokens run out, upgrade to Pro
  4. 4Model cost and integration
  5. Leak: margin leak: token revenue flows to the model provider

The loop runs on model quality; Bolt's contribution is zero setup. The red arrow shows how much of the token revenue flows out.

The drawing shows the shape of the loop; each node is explained in the list below. The red arrow marks value leaking out of the loop.

Mechanism

Acquisition channels
A launch on X with demo videos; according to the podcast page the product "launched Bolt on Twitter and exploded" [1]. StackBlitz's existing developer base carried the first wave. The founder became the channel: several long interviews within a few months, including Lenny's Podcast [1]. Hackathons and agency stories on the blog read as a second wave [6].
Loop
A user generates an app from a prompt, shares the working site, a new user tries it on free tokens, tokens run out and the user upgrades to Pro, revenue goes to model cost and better model integration, better output. The fuel of the loop belongs to the model, not to Bolt: "When Claude 3.5 Sonnet launched, it changed everything" [1].
Activation
A working app on the first prompt. The 300K daily token cap on the free tier keeps the trial short [5].
Retention evidence
No retention statement. In March 2025, 1 million monthly active and 3 million registered users, so roughly a third of sign-ups were active [1]; no data afterwards.
Role of pricing
Token pricing ties growth directly to model cost; Sacra's gross margin estimate for May 2025 is roughly 40 percent [4]. The July 2025 rollover change and the September 2026 "50X usage" campaign read as responses to a price and value perception problem [5] [6] (opinion).
Distribution moves
Teams and Enterprise tiers, a Microsoft Azure partnership in May 2026 (Sacra compilation) [4], Bolt Forge and the Dokai acquisition in September 2026 [6].
Team
15–20 people in March 2025 [1]. Two claims from the same date give roughly $2M revenue per employee; that is a derivation, not a company statement.

Real reading

The five questions of the Growth Claim Check, applied to this company's public claims.

  1. 01

What was measured, and by whom?

    unclear

ARR is a founder claim (podcast); no definition, assumed to be monthly revenue times twelve.

  2. 02

    Perception or outcome?

    yes

Revenue and monthly active users, so outcome and usage together.

  3. 03

Is there a stability or quality metric?

    no

Churn, margin and token consumption distribution undisclosed; margin is only a Sacra estimate.

  4. 04

Is there a counterfactual or cohort?

    no

    No cohort or control group.

  5. 05

    Nominal or real?

    unclear

In a token model, early-month revenue may partly be one-off curiosity spend; the silence after mid-2025 deepens the doubt.

Verdict

Gaps remain

The explosion is documented, the persistence is not. No public revenue update was found after March 2025.

06

Shadow side

  • No ARR update after mid-2025; the only figure Sacra reports for December 2025 is more than 7 million users, not revenue [4].
  • Lovable's claims in the same category overshadowed Bolt; the two products' different paths form a comparison pair in this archive (opinion).
  • The rollover change and the free "50X usage" campaign may signal that the price/value balance did not hold [5] [6] (opinion).

What it teaches a founder in Türkiye

This section is opinion; a reading, not a source.

  1. 01

(opinion) An explosion takes preparation: seven years of infrastructure, the right model threshold, the right launch moment. A viral result is not luck, it is accumulated debt being repaid.

  2. 02

(opinion) The founder is the channel: several long podcasts within a few months. In Turkey the founder narrative is still an underused channel.

  3. 03

(opinion) Under token pricing, look at the ninety-day cohort before celebrating ARR; the difference between curiosity spend and habit shows up there.

  4. 04

(opinion) Silence after an explosion is a signal. Plan the "second five months" of your own product from day one.

A question for you: remove this company's logo and drop the loop onto your own product. Which node stays empty?
