Midjourney

An image-generation product that grew inside Discord for years without outside capital, without ads and for a long time without its own website; the size of its revenue can be checked two independent ways, the health of its growth cannot be checked at all.

Verdict: Gaps remain

01

Profile

What it does
Subscription product for text-to-image (since 2022) and video. It ran only inside Discord until August 2024, when a web interface shipped with version 6.1 [2]. In 2022 the founder described the company as a "self-funded research lab" [1].
Founded
Founded in 2021 as a research lab, open beta in July 2022 [1]. San Francisco.
Founders
David Holz, co-founder of Leap Motion [2].
Pricing model
Monthly subscription tiers; metered use through fast GPU hours and a slower "relax" mode. The founder's 2022 principle: the user pays the raw cost and a percentage is added on top [1]. The official pricing page could not be opened during this research; tier prices must be verified before publication.
Funding
  • No outside investment. Holz, August 2022: "We're self-funded. We have no investors." [1]
  • March 2026: reports that outside capital may be considered for the first time, for a hardware project (secondary data) [3]

Growth loop

  1. 1User writes a prompt
  2. 2Image appears in a public channel
  3. 3Onlooker tries it
  4. 4Subscribes, output grows
  5. Leak: black box: no usage data ever leaves

The loop runs on visible production: every prompt is processed in front of other people, so the product is its own storefront. The red edge marks the part of the loop nobody outside can verify.

The drawing shows the shape of the loop; each node is explained in the list below. The red arrow marks value leaking out of the loop.

04

Mechanism

Acquisition channels
One channel: Discord. The user joins the server and writes prompts in channels everyone can see, so every generation happens in front of others. No ads, no PR team, no press releases; in 2022 the founder, describing "hundreds of thousands of people using the service, which requires something like 10,000 servers", never mentions marketing spend [1].
Loop
A prompt is written, the image appears in a public channel, onlookers learn how it was made and try it, they stay on the server, subscribe, and push more output into the public stream. The in-server version of Higgsfield's viral output on social media (opinion).
Activation
First value within minutes of the first prompt; in 2022 subscriptions sat at $10 and $30 per month [1]. Funnel data is closed to the public; activation is measured behind the paywall (opinion).
Retention evidence
No retention evidence. The 2022 profitability claim [1] and rising revenue over the years [3] are indirect signals; no cohort, churn or active-user figure has ever been published.
Role of pricing
GPU-hour metering, a rare model in which cost flows straight into price. Holz, 2022: "they have to pay the cost of using it because the raw cost is actually quite expensive. And then we add a percentage on top of that" [1]. It solved margin pressure through price structure from day one; Cursor's 2025 pricing crisis was pre-empted here three years earlier (opinion).
Distribution moves
Release cadence (new model versions, video), office-hours chats where the founder talks to the community directly, and a late move to a web app (August 2024) [2]. No API, no integrations; distribution deliberately narrow.
Team
About 10 people in 2022 [1]. Headcounts for later years are secondary estimates only; revenue-per-employee figures are not used on this page.

Real reading

The five questions of the Growth Claim Check, applied to this company's public claims.

  1. 01

What was measured, and by whom?

    unclear

Every revenue figure is a founder claim or comes from the opposing side's court filing; no audited financials.

  2. 02

    Perception or outcome?

    unclear

Revenue is an outcome metric, but the "profitable" claim was never defined (gross or net).

  3. 03

Is there a stability or quality metric?

    no

No churn, cohort or active-user data is published.

  4. 04

Is there a counterfactual or cohort?

    no

No control group or cohort disclosure.

  5. 05

    Nominal or real?

    unclear

Subscription revenue, not credit pre-sales or pilot revenue, so the risk of nominal inflation is low. Campaign and currency effects unknown.

Verdict

Gaps remain

The size of revenue is reasonably credible: founder statements and the plaintiffs' filing are two independent routes. On the health of that growth there is no public evidence at all.

Shadow side

  • Copyright: the Disney and Universal lawsuit filed on 11 June 2025 [2]; on training data, the founder's reported words: "It's just a big scrape of the internet. We weren't picky." [3]
  • Black box: no user or churn data at all; dependence on Discord was a platform risk for years [2].
  • Possible first outside capital for a hardware project; the "no investors" story may change (secondary data) [3].

07

What it teaches a founder in Türkiye

This section is opinion; a reading, not a source.

  1. 01

(opinion) The distribution channel is wherever the product is visible. Midjourney chose a place where generation happens in front of everyone before it even built a website. For a low-traffic product, "can other people see the user's output?" comes before the ad budget.

  2. 02

(opinion) Write cost into price from the start. GPU-hour metering is the most instructive part for a Turkish founder squeezed between dollar costs and lira revenue: Midjourney never sold "unlimited".

  3. 03

(opinion) Closing the free tier shrinks the funnel but filters tourists. It does not fit every product; do not copy it without measuring.

  4. 04

(opinion) Silence can be a growth strategy. This is the only case on the list that grew without PR, announcements or funding rounds. The price is that nothing can be verified from outside.

  5. 05

(opinion) Same category as Higgsfield, opposite game: one plays speed and capital, the other slowness and profit. Neither has public retention data; the difference is in capital structure, not in evidence. Test question: if you had no investors, which number would you publish this month?

A question for you: remove this company's logo and drop the loop onto your own product. Which node stays empty?
