What is a good CAC payback period?
Last checked:
Short answer
According to Aleph and Benchmarkit's 2025 data, the median CAC payback in B2B SaaS is 16 months; the top quartile is 6 months or less and the bottom quartile 24 months or more. David Skok says the best businesses recover it in 5-7 months. Payback lengthens as ACV grows, so compare within your own band.

CAC payback period
How to read it
- These are company-wide medians. They separate sharply by ACV band: 11 months under $5k, 22 months at $50-100k.
- The link with growth is not linear: in Aleph's data the 21-30% growth group has the highest median at 22 months, while companies growing above 50% sit at 10 months.
- Aleph is a software company summarizing the Benchmarkit report; the data are full-year 2025 actuals. Skok's threshold is a guideline based on the author's observation.
What moves this metric
- 01
Gross-margin adjustment
Compute payback on gross profit, not revenue. A low-margin product has a longer real payback.
- 02
Sales cycle
Every step that shortens decision time shortens the return on spend.
- 03
Channel mix
Measure how fast each channel pays back separately; the average hides differences.
- 04
Customer focus
A clear target customer profile cuts sales and marketing spend that goes nowhere.

Frequently asked
Is 12 months good?
According to Skok, beyond 12 months profitability weakens; in Aleph's data the median is 16. So 12 months is a good reference, but with a high ACV it may not be realistic.
Should I compute payback on revenue or gross margin?
On gross margin where possible. Sources may define the period differently; compare your definition with theirs before benchmarking.
Why do fast-growing companies pay back sooner?
In Aleph's data companies growing above 50% have a median of 10 months. The report reads this as fast growth not being bought through inefficient acquisition; it is not a causal claim.
