Formula
ARR per employee = ARR ÷ Number of full-time employees (FTE)
In practice
Bessemer's 2025 report finds this measure at 4-5x a typical SaaS benchmark among the fastest-growing AI startups, but also low gross margins in the same group. Read the two together: a small team may have moved its cost into the inference bill, so ARR per employee can be high while contribution margin stays weak (our reading). An agentic growth team has the same trap: using agents instead of hiring raises the ratio, but if agent cost and the human hours spent fixing errors are left out, the ratio misleads (our reading).
