MCP / Model Context Protocol

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

An open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems (data sources, tools, workflows). Anthropic announced it in November 2024; the official docs compare it to a USB-C port for AI applications: one protocol instead of a separate integration for every data source.

In practice

For growth, MCP is less an integration detail than a distribution channel: if you expose your product's data and actions through an MCP server, the AI assistant your customer already uses can call your product (our reading). It reopens the old question of integration strategy: which work, once opened to agents, grows usage, and which turns your product into an invisible data pipe in the background? (our reading). Pick the one action you will expose first, then measure the usage that comes through it separately.
